&lt;h2 id="the-problem"&gt;The Problem&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;RL training with tool-calling LLMs requires interactive environments: the model generates a tool call, the environment executes it and returns an observation, and the model generates the next action. But:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;External environments communicate over &lt;strong&gt;WebSocket&lt;/strong&gt; (async)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Training loops run &lt;strong&gt;synchronously&lt;/strong&gt; inside torch distributed&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Environments may define &lt;strong&gt;different tool schemas&lt;/strong&gt; that the LLM needs to understand&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Rewards may be &lt;strong&gt;sparse&lt;/strong&gt; (only at episode end) or &lt;strong&gt;per-step&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Twinkle&amp;rsquo;s &lt;code&gt;envs&lt;/code&gt; module solves all of these with three layers of abstraction.&lt;/p&gt;
